“Practical Tutors Designed to Tutoring the Whole-Student”
D.S. Solutions story grew out of a need for passionate teachers who cared about their students’ success. I began working in a tutor lab designed specifically for students who were struggling with Math in the Fall of 08’ at a local university. After a year of experience and coming to the realization that I am unable to answer every question that comes through the door pertaining to Math, I realized that I had actually developed quite a little following as one of the better math tutors in the lab. I did not and still don’t believe I do anything to merit any sort of exceptional teaching awards in the near future. I know what I did do though—I cared about the newly developed relationships and success of the students I worked with each day.
In the Fall of 2009, I received a few requests from students who wanted to know if I could possibly meet up with them sometime throughout the week in order to go over homework, explain a concept, or simply help them prepare for an exam worth 30% of their grade involving mathematics they could barely pronounce much less complete! Honestly, I felt it my duty and an honor to help these students who had become friends. They chose to find time each week to meet me in tutor lab during my shifts and receive my advice and guidance pertaining to their class. What was the point of me tutoring them for the 30 minutes they could steal in their busy schedules once a week, only to be unavailable for the test or assignment that truly mattered and required an hour of one-on-one time? Their professors were barely willing to help them in-class with their questions, much less outside of the classroom. And, the professors that did have consistent offices hours were just as confusing and demeaning as they were in the classroom. If I were a student already uncomfortable and unconfident in my abilities, why would I go to someone who made me feel more uncomfortable and even less confident than when I walked in? Consequently, from this dilemma, D.S. Solutions grew out of a passion to reach and teach successful students who had forgotten just how successful they truly were.
